York University School of Continuing Studies
2024
Web Design, Brand Refresh
Role:
UI Designer, Visual Designer
Project overview
York University School of Continuing Studies is a leading institution that provides flexible and innovative learning opportunities designed to help learners grow personally and professionally. The school offers professional programs and language education for both local and international students looking to enhance their careers or transition into new fields.
As the UI designer for this project, my role was to refresh the website's appearance, emphasizing the faculty's colours and aligning it more closely with their new brand guidelines and vision. The goal was to attract potential students to enroll in online and hybrid courses.
Challenges
Reuse existing module library
We worked with a WordPress module library where only CSS overrides were permitted. This made a deep understanding of HTML and CSS essential for implementing effective design changes to components and modules.
Adhering to brand guidelines
The project required strict compliance with York University's brand standards, including specific instructions on the use of YorkU and faculty colours, as well as brand elements.
Limited photo library
With minimal imagery options available, we needed to get creative with the visual approach to maintain an engaging and consistent aesthetic.
Solutions
Optimizing CSS for impact
By collaborating closely with developers and working within the constraints of the existing component library, we refined key design elements, such as background color and padding, to visually align with the new brand without requiring development from scratch. This approach ensured that every reskin remained consistent with the design system, making the process more efficient and scalable
Creative brand element application
We thoroughly analyzed and experimented with YorkU's brand colours and emblems, including the 'Window of Positive Change' element. This was thoughtfully integrated across various sections of the site. Early feedback was collected through UI workshops to ensure these branding elements were effective before full implementation.
Strategic brand imagery use
We selected stock imagery with a focus on diversity, helping users envision their future careers in different industries. Additionally, we provided Figma visual templates, allowing the client to maintain consistency in graphics for future website updates.
